Promotion does not only mean increase in your salary but it also comes with added job responsibilities. As the famous saying goes, “With power come great responsibilities”.
The general misconception is that to get a promotion in job, you have to do overtime, show up early in office, leave late, and show that all you are enthusiastic about is work. It is not true at all.
If you are longing for a promotion in your job, read the following possible reasons.
Every job position requires specific skills. You should know what skills you need for the role to which you want to get promoted. You can find it out from someone who is currently at that position or ask it from your HR person. Once you know what to look for, you can learn about the skills from the internet easily.
Yes, higher positions do not demand only work skills but also soft skills. You cannot become a good team leader or manager without them. Leadership qualities include effective communication skills, problem-solving approach, and ability to coach and develop the team members. You can practice these skills by mentoring your new colleagues in your office.
It always feels nice to get positive feedback but the negatives are important too. Don’t be offended and defensive against them. The natural first reaction can be that you try to explain them the reason, but instead, try to explain yourself what caused such a feedback. Then find out how you can improve on them. A positive attitude towards feedback and remarks will let your seniors develop confidence in you.
Get noticed
Don’t let your managers or colleagues forget about your existence in office. They may not notice every little thing you do and that is why it is important that you keep interacting with them. Talk to others about what you are doing and what they are doing. We don’t mean you need to be arrogant or a pompous about your work. In fact start praising others publicly.
Get mentored
While mentoring a new co-worker is a good way to show your leadership qualities, finding a mentor for you is not a bad idea. Find someone who can guide you to perform better in your field and tell you about your strengths and weaknesses. The employees, who have a mentor at work, are seen to perform better.
Don’t get into politics
Playing office politics may win you short-term achievements, but they will not do you any good in the long run. Office politics is always messy and a waste of time. In stead, direct your focus solely on your work and promotion. Invest your energy in learning new skills and volunteering new projects, that is what will help you to get promotion in job, not politics.
Get patience
While you do all the above to get a promotion in job, you need to keep patience. Getting impatient about not getting a promotion is of no use at all. This will only ruin the chances of your promotion. Grow as a person and learn new things that will help you in your career, wait for the rewards. Remember to chase excellence and success will chase you.
Ask for it
Last but not the least, if you think your performance to be up to the mark and that you can manage the new job responsibilities well, it is all right to ask fro a promotion. Let your managers know that you are interested in a promotion. Try to know from them what it requires to get the new position. Take initiatives, it would show them that you are keen for it.
